Development Cooperation in Africa

The Australian Aid program

The Australian Government's aid program aims to reduce poverty and contribute to sustainable economic growth in developing countries. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade manages the Australian aid program.

Australia's Development Assistance to Africa

Australia's Development Assistance to Sub-Saharan Africa

Australia Awards, a cornerstone of the Australian Government’s development assistance program for Africa, provide access to postgraduate education, training and professional development opportunities for suitably qualified Africans from eligible countries.

The Australia Awards Africa Scholarship program combines Masters, Fellowships and Short Course opportunities to build skills and capabilities in key sectors, thereby contributing to social and economic development outcomes for African nations.

Australia Awards directly support Australia's interests in the security, stability, and prosperity of the African continent by strengthening African leadership and skills in fields such as climate change, agriculture and food security, climate change and adaptation, mining and energy, foreign policy and international security and gender, disability, and social inclusion. We focus on those sectors where Australia and African nations have shared interests and where Australia has world-leading expertise to offer.

Applicants are assessed on their professional and personal qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, their potential to positively impact inclusive development in eligible countries.

Applications are strongly encouraged from women, people with disability and other marginalised groups. Please visit GEDSI Support Hub for additional information about how the Program supports inclusivity.

Small Grants - Direct Aid Program

WHAT IS THE DIRECT AID PROGRAM (DAP)

The DAP is a small-grants scheme which aims to support non-profit organisations working in local communities on activities which support sustainable and equitable development.

The Australian High Commission in Pretoria disburses DAP funding to projects in Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and South Africa.

The DAP supports community groups, international and Australian NGOs and other civil society organisations that are lawfully operating in these countries.

PROCESS

In the current Australian financial year (1 July 2024 to 30 June 2025), the High Commission will run a closed DAP funding round.

This means we will invite organisations to submit an application for DAP funding. The High Commission will not open for an Expression of Interest round for the 2024-2025 financial year.  Please do not send an unsolicited application.

If you have any questions about the DAP for 2024-2025 , please email dap.pretoria@dfat.gov.au.

Important note: DAP program and application requirements can change from year-to-year. Please do not rely on information that does not appear on this website or that you did not receive directly from the High Commission.
