The Australian High Commission is the official representative of the Australian Government in South Africa. We provide a range of services to the general public, including consular, passport, visa and immigration, citizenship and cultural relations services. We also act on behalf of various Australian Government authorities by representing Australia's interests to local, regional and multilateral government and business organisations in South Africa.
Employment at the High Commission is determined by an open, merit-based selection process. To be eligible for selection, all candidates must satisfy the essential selection criteria and meet any security clearance requirements. The Selection Advisory Committee (SAC) forms an integral component of our selection process, creating a fair and consistent recruitment process. The SAC will recommend a merit ranking of all interviewed eligible candidates.

Applying for temporary employment register
To work at the Australian High Commission, it is a South African Home Affairs requirement that you must be a South African citizen, or a South Africa lawful permanent resident, or a dependant of an Australian officer posted to the High Commission and possess a dependant visa. All employees on South African work permits may only work for the validity of the issued work permit and must renew their permit, if eligible for a renewal, in order to remain employed. Renewing a work permit card can take several weeks to months and holders are advised to seek renewal early.
To be considered for full-time or part-time temporary work at the High Commission, applicants are required to provide the following:
- a completed temporary work application form (PDF)
- a completed probity check (.docx) with all required supporting documentation listed on page 16
- a completed personal particulars form (.docx)
- an electronic copy of their current drivers licence
- an electronic copy of the biodata (photo) page of their current passport
- proof of valid work authorisation for South Africa
- an electronic South African ID copy (For South African citizens)

Temporary vacancies are usually filled on a short-term contract basis from those listed on the High Commission’s temporary staff register. Vacancies may vary between full and part-time, and fixed contract and casual, but will always be less than 6 months in length. Types of temporary vacancies include event/visit management, corporate services, registry/file assistant, consular/passport services, and driver.
Occasionally, longer term temporary vacancies (6 months or more) will occur and will be advertised on Current Vacancies.
Please note that applications are kept on file for 12 months. Your application will be considered when temporary vacancies arise and decisions are based on suitability, availability, and/or the possession of a security clearance (if required by the position). Start dates for all temporary vacancies are subject to satisfactory background checks being completed for all individuals. Only those applicants with valid work permits to work in South Africa will be considered for the Temporary Registry.

The Recruitment and Selection Process
All positions advertised at the Australian High Commission, South Africa have a Job Description setting out the responsibilities and tasks of the job and a Selection Criteria describing the key competencies, skills, and/or qualifications required to perform in the position.
Resumes are reviewed based on the applicant’s skills, qualifications and relative suitability to the role. Those applicants considered most suitable are contacted for interview.
A Selection Panel is formed, comprised of three Australian High Commission staff members across different departments, who are responsible for selection decisions. The Job Description and Selection Criteria are used as a benchmark for assessing applications. All engagements are the result of merit-based selection processes. During the recruitment process the following criteria are assessed and considered:
1. Relative suitability of the candidate for the duties;
2. Candidates' work-related abilities and qualifications, as required for the position; and
3. Capacity of the candidate to achieve outcomes related to the duties;
